Opera is still in Beta test, the latest version is V.1.8.8 (Download from Link below!!) – The new “Opera” Single carrier Data/Beacon mode Tx/Rx, is created by EA5HVK, Jose Alberto Nieto Ros, by request of GØNBD for Ham Radio CW Community – This software, complete windows compatible Tx/Rx package with internet spotting and chat facility, COM-port keying and audio tx drive, is free!
Opera QRSS.
Link To: PSKreporter / to: Opera group Yahoo / to: Ros and Opera official web-page

The new software “Opera” Beta, developed by EA5HVK, Jose Ros (author of the now established ROS Data mode!) using DSP techniques, it’s a alternative QRSS for weak signal experiments on 136 & 500 kHz and for HF all bands (80 to 10 mt) for Ver. 1.1.2 up – Better than standard QRSS, similar like WSPR, but with Opera you can choose your own interval time between 1 and 60 minutes.
CAT Link embodied and Tx by COM port Key or Audio drive Tx\Rx COM port switch faclity – Decoder are possible with S/N – 26 to -38 dB (Rx speed auto-selected!) The spots are visible in near realtime to interested parties with PSKreporter and Hamspots.com (see the links) – This as a way of providing data operations for stations that only had the CW capability. The most up to date information on this mode can be found at groups.yahoo.com (see the link up)

QST Magazine reviews the TS-590S on May, 2011 by N0AX, H. Ward Silver . The review radio originally shipped with firmware Ver 1.00 (S/N B0900113 September, 2010) but was upgraded to firmware Ver. 1.02 for final testing on the ARRL Laboratory.
N0AX also writes: The TS-590 is a very interesting superhetero-dyne that operates as either a double-down conversion (RX1), used on the 160, 80, 40, 20 and 15 meter bands for SSB, CW and FSK only; Triple up-conversion (RX2) chain on other bands, including 10 and 6 meters is used for wider IF BW such as for AM and FM, in addition to the SSB, CW and FSK.
Source: QST reviews, we show only the figures at 14 MHz, Pre OFF ( K3 / TS-590S)
I found the adjustable AGC action to be quite clean — no clicks, thumps or pops. It’s possible for a very close signal to be inside the roofing filter but outside a narrower DSP filter, causing the audio level to fall dramatically, but the signal has to be really close.
When either NR system is turned up to its most aggressive setting audible artifacts are created (NR2 artifacts sound like the band is “boiling”) but both are far better than the noise they have replaced.
The only problem I encountered was a significant power overshoot on the leading edge of a first dot or dash before recovering to the intended level. That caused the ACOM Series amplifier to trip offline unless we reduced drive, dropping amp output to 800-1000 W. – The problem was eliminated by a Ver. 1.02 firmware upgrade from Kenwood and verified by testing with the same amplifier at W1AW at the legal limit. –

Japan Earthquake 8.9 and Tsunami! Prayers for all people in Japan, God bless them!! - (Clik the photo and thumbnails to enlarge)
Both ICOM, Kenwood and Vertex Standard have issued statements concerning the affect of the earthquake on their factories.
It appears Icom’s facilities at Osaka and Wakayama are in the south of the country and Kenwood’s primary office facilities in Yokohama and Hachioji are to the south and west of the quake’s epicentre. Kenwood’s primary manufacturing facility is located in Malaysia. The production of Yaesu Amateur Radio equipment at Vertex Standard’s factory in Fukushima, Japan, has been temporarily halted due to earthquake damage. It is understood the factory is just 60km from the quake-stricken nuclear reactors ! – See the Link below

This modification creates a “receive only” antenna port for use with an external receiver. It can also be configured to insert one of the available RF noise cancelling devices between the antenna and the receiver input of the Model 599 Eagle radio. - Two optional installations are presented.
1) INTERFACE WITH RCA PHONO CONNECTORS ADDED TO REAR PANEL
The first involves mounting two new RCA phono jacks on the Eagle rear panel for connection to the receiver or noise canceler.
2) NO CONNECTOR INTERFACE
The second is a “no hole” approach which brings the two RF cables out the side of the radio through the ventilation holes on either the left or right side, near the rear of the radio

Here follows a short summary by © www.radiocronache.com taken from ©RadCom 01/2011 – (View the 01/2011 ©RadCom Magazine to read the full review by Peter Hart. A large and very interesting technical work, thanks) –

The TS-590S is a single receiver tuning 30 kHz to 60MHz, although the performances is specified within the amateur bands. – The menu system is very comprehensive with 88 items, it uses scrolling display annotation. – Menu items allow for both fast and slow linear switching separely for HF and 50MHz but there is only one linear control line. - For use with transverters, the display can be set to indicate the trasverter frequency. Three digits are available for the MHz segment, eg 144 or 432.
Measurements – Peter evaluates separately two path: RX1 down-conversion and RX2 up-conversion. ————– (Short summary data)
The rejection of IFs and image for the RX1 down-conversion path was typically 75dB to 90dB (1*) – For the RX2 up-conversion path these figures were typically better than 90dB. – He searched carefully for other spurious responses as DDS circuits tend to be prone to this problem. – RX2 was very clean with no responses less than 80dB down. – RX1 was exceptionally clean with no other responses less than 100dB down (2*).
- (1*) FTdx-5000 the 9MHz IF rejection on 10MHz it was only 54dB, and on 7MHz it was 74dB. - (2*) FTdx-5000 the first mixer image was only down by 55dB to 70dB (>RadCom June, 2010 review)
IP3 Intercept and IMD3 Dinamic figures for bands (1.8 3.5 7 14 21 MHz) that use RX-1 the measurement was made 2.3kHz bandwidth. By measuring in 2.8kHz bandwidth all bands (1.3 3.5 7 10 14 18 21 24 28 50 MHz) use RX2 path.
—– RX1 path USB mode (50kHz Spacing)
7MHz Preamp OFF – Bandwidt 2.3kHz: IP3 +31dBm IMD3 105dB
7MHz Pream ON — Bandwidt 2.3kHz: IP3 +22dBm IMD3 105dB
—– RX2 path USB mode (50kHz Spacing)
24MHz Preamp OFF – Bandwidt 2.8kHz: IP3 +18dBm IMD3 98dB
24MHz Pream ON – Bandwidt 2.8kHz: IP3 +6.5dBm IMD3 96dB
Close-in IP3 and IMD3 figures were made in 500Hz bandwidth with RX1 on 7MHz and RX2 on 10MHz.
- RX1 uses the 500Hz bandwidth roofing filter. – RX2 the 2.7kHz bandwidth filter at the second IF and 15kHz rofing filter at the first IF. - The results for RX1 path are really excellente, achiving 103dB IMD3 at 2kHz spacing and 90dB at 1kHz! – The results for RX2 path show the efect of the wider roofing filters (15kHz+2.7kHz). Then at 2kHz and below the signal enter the second IF filter passaband and the AGC takes effect.
—- RX1 7MHz Preamp OFF CW mode – DSP Bandwidt 500Hz – IF Roofing 500Hz:
2kHz sapcing IP3 +23dBm IMD3 103dB / 10kHz spacing IP3 +30.5dBm IMD3 108dB
—- RX2 10MHz Preamp OFF CW mode – DSP Bandwidt 500Hz – IF Roofing 15kHz and 2nd IF 2.7kHz:
2kHz spacing IP3 IMD3 see text below / 10kHz spacing IP3 +21dBm IMD3 103dB
A somewhat complex AGC system is used, detecting signal level in three places within the DSP signal path. – The close-in strong signal performance in some cases may be limited by the AGC when a strong signal falling inside the filter roofing but still outside of the final channel filter will result in AGC action. – This can be heard as a quietening of the receiver from a very strong signal just outside of the channel passaband. - The effect is most noticeable with the wider roofing filters and is not an issue with the 500Hz roofing filter in circuit. – [Note] clik the thumbnails to enlarge!
