IC-7700 New PA uses a STAC2942 (Rev S/N #12 #13) – NPR rx Testing by VA7OJ Adam

20/12/2012

New IC-7700 MOSFET PA Unit - The IC-7700′s (S/N #12 USA/Canada, S/N #13 EUR etc.*) now have just one Mosfet (STAC2942) on the PA board, instead of the two MRF-150 of previous PA Unit (ex S/N #02 USA/Canada, ex S/N #03 EUR etc.*)
NPR Testing HF Receivers – Noise Power Ratio (NPR) Testing of HF Receivers Using notched noise to evaluate dynamic receiver performance – (To put the impact of the NPR test into perspective, a -9 dBm Ptot level at 5.6 MHz BRF is equivalent to 1200 simultaneous SSB signals at -43 dBm each, i.e. S9 + 30 dB!) etc…. by Adam Farson, VA7OJ/AB4OJ- (!! updated in March, 2013)

IC-7700 HF 50MHz Transceiver new PA-UNIT - Higher Power – STAC2942 & STAC3932 saturates at over 500W  - (updated 18 April, 2012 by radiocronache!)

Esempio*: Giappone: #11XXXXX – USA / Canada: #12XXXXX – UE: #13XXXXX etc.

The current Rev. #12/#13 version incorporates the new PA-UNIT and LPF modules, and in addition several other modules are also “up-rev.” from the earlier version.

The IC-7700 uses a STAC2942 power amplifier in common source push-pull configuration (common source). The power amplifier provides a eliable 200W of output power up to 54MHz. – The STAC2942B is a gold metallized N-channel MOS field-effect RF power transistor. It is intended for use in 50 V DC large signal applications up to 250 MHz (ST datasheet)
The effective quad cooling fan system makes it possible to generate 200W full power output even during full duty cycle operation.

[Note*] IC-7700′s Version and Intended Country of Use: S/N #13 (Europe-01) #14 (France-01) #15 Italy-01) #16 (Spain-01) #17 (United Kingdom-01) #012 (America)

[Rumors] It is said that the manufacturer of the MRF-150 used in the 7700′s series PA Unit, has recently discontinued this supply. This event has probably brought Icom to design a new PA Unit based on  the new DMOS STAC2942 ©STMicroelectronics parts.
 * Other regional variants will have different serial number for the change-over to a MOSFET PA – (!! Official info: ask retailers or Icom Inc., please)

The DSP IF filter shape factor (-6/-60 dB). This is the ratio of the -60 dB bandwidth to the -6 dB bandwidth, which is a figure of merit for the filter’s adjacent-channel’s rejection. The lower the shape factor, the “tighter” the filter. – The two type of DSP filter shape factor for each SSB, SSB-Data and CW can be selected independently from soft and sharp.
A sharp profile with a flat passband and soft profile with a more rounded passband (Twin Passband Tuning [TWIN-PBT] is also easily provided, which enables the filter sides to be both indipendently moved and narrowed, the DSP also provides audio filtering and shaping functions). Depending on  the operating situation, for example handling a pile-up or receiving a very weak signal, you can flexibly change sharp and soft filter shapes or reduce or shift the filter width, even while receiving a signal, by a simple push of a front panel key. IC-7700 Firmware update Ver 1.10;  Icom have released firmware version 1.10 for the IC-7700 Update 2009/06/08 – A description of the changes and download F/W appear in the link  below:

The firmware version of the IC-7700 can be confirmed during turning power ON  • The version appears at the right bottom corner.
[Note] Never cut off power to the transceiver while updating the firmware!
I have a sneaky feeling that interrupting the update process can corrupt the boot-loader (See the Note) For safety’s sake, plug the 7700 into the computer UPS (750 VA) when upgrading (UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply)  However i belive that any thorough design would must have a boot-loader in a protected sector of the flash of  course so that it couldn’t be erased under normal software update circumstances.
ICOM issued a clarification stating that the firmware updates are in fact cumulative. When you install 1.10 it include the updated previus features
As recommended by Icom, first save your custom settings to USB memory. Upgrading to F/W version 1.10 results in a  *full reset* of the IC-7700

IT

IC-7700 New Firmware Update – Icom Japan have released the latest firmware V1.04 on Dec 11, 2008.

Link to: ICOM.co.jp – World Support official web page

ENG:  Major points of update from Ver.1.03 to Ver.1.04: Improvements in the software performance for the DSP UNIT
Noted a very subtle improvement in
[NR] operation. The NR seems to track voice peaks a little faster and attenuate highs
somewhat less than in ver. 1.03.
Noted now listen to AM BBC WS on SSB/ECSS during the day during non DX time and hear it without the previous annoying distortion, as the audio no created loud transients of high notes. – - -

The PA Unit from IC-7700 delivers 200W – Some common sense rules for ensuring long PA life!

19/11/2008

The final PA stage from IC-7700 delivers 200W.
Specifiche da M/A-COM Technical Data  a 50 Volts, 30MHz, per ciascun MRF150: Output power = 150 Watts; Power Gain 17 dB (Typ); IMD (d3) (150W PEP) -32 dB (Typ); IMD (d11) -60 dB (Typ); 100% Tested for load Mismatch at all Phase angles with 30:1 VSWR!

The final PA stage delivers 200W (at full duty cycle) with a push-pull circuit using two MRF150 MOSFET RF power devices from tyco/Electronics M/A-COM, fed with 48V DC. The circuit is well-designed. The MRF150 designed primarily for linear large-signal output stages up to 150MHz frequency range.

IC-7700 RF UNIT, 2nd Mixer as a image rejection. Circuit Description

26/10/2008

IC-7700 RF UNIT, 2nd Mixer as a image rejection, Circuit Description. Note the large toroidal coils, BPF bank

Link to: Adam, VA7OJ’s IC-7700 User Review web page

ENG:
The converted 1st RX IF signal is then filtered bay one of 1st IF Roofing Filters (3-6-15 kHz).
The filtered 1st IF signal is splitted into two before being applied to the 2nd Mixers, as a image rejection Mixer. Each divided 1st IF signal is mixed with 2nd LO signals from the PLL UNIT, to be converted into the 36kHz 2nd RX IF signal. One of the LO signal is 90 degrees phase-shifted before being applied to 2nd Mixer (9A41-G), and the converted 2nd RX IF is 90 degrees phase-shifted too.
These converted 2nd IF signals whose phase is different each other are phase-shifted by the phase shifter, then composed by the composer (NJM074M). The composed 2nd IF signal is amplified by another 2nd IF AMP, then entered to the ADC (AK5394) to be converted into the 24-bit serial data. The serial data is applied to the DSP (TMS320C6727) on the MAIN UNIT
