FTDX-1200 & FTDX-3000 Now Adj. RF Power SSB With CAR Knob – Analog or SDR RTX?

FTDX-1200 Update Ver. 01.09 and FTDX-3000 Update Ver. 01.19  (08/07/2014) now adjusts the TX RF Power output for SSB & CW modes with the [PROC/CAR] knob on front panel.

After loaded new firmware, the Menu item now gives “177 TX GNRL” option to selects: TX PWR or PROC CONTROL. (Default setting: TX PWR) – New firmware includes additional improvements of functions and optimization.

Dopo aver caricato i nuovi software, il passo del menù “177” prevede ora l’opzione per il controllo continuo della potenza TX RF output anche  in SSB. Oppure del livello del Processore, con l’uso diretto della manopola [PROC/CAR] così come avveniva prima solo per il modo modo CW.  Le altre istruzioni in modo diverso dalla SSB rimangono invariate. Yaesu dichiara che, nei nuovi firmware, sono inclusi altri miglioramenti di funzionamento e altre ottimizzazione.

It makes logical sense that Icom’s, Yaesu’s next product should be a stand-alone SDR. – The superheterodyne with IF-DSP architecture has reached a point of maturity beyond which little, if any improvement is possible! –

italianoLo FTdx-1200 condivide l’aspetto esterno e le dimensioni del fratello-cugino FTdx-3000 che però utilizza la down-conversion in IF.  L’FTdx-1200 ha una diversa architettura per il circuito del ricevitore con la up-conversion in IF. – Come evidenziano anche i test di QST e di VA7OJ, Adam l’FTdx-3000 presenta numeri più performanti, l’FTdx-1200 ottiene valori riscontrabili, sia nel FT-950 che in  molti altri ricetrasmettitori recenti di costo medio basso. Quindi si può dire che si presenta con buone prestazioni, ma non fino ai livelli del ‘3000 o del ‘5000 dello stesso produttore! –

Il FTdx -1200 con il suo Display a colori da 4,3″ TFT offre una analisi di spettro che opera in una modalità intermittente. Cioè, automaticamente e in modo veloce (300 ms) sottrae una frazione al ricevitore e fa la scansione (sweep), bloccando l’audio del ricevitore. – Tra le veloci scansioni , mostra l’ultimo “snapshot” prelevato nell’intervallo settato (in due modi Select or Auto mode). –  Se si acquista la scheda opzionale FFT-1, la portata dello spettro può anche funzionare come un oscilloscopio per osservare attentamente sia il segnale audio ricevuto, sia il segnale audio trasmesso con il dominio del tempo in frequenza (cascata = waterfall) (AF FFT Audio Frequency Fast Fourier Transform). Con l’aggiornamento del Firmware FTdx-3000D Ver. 01-14 Main-CPU e la Ver. 01-07  TFT rilasciate in data 07/Luglio/2013 è stata introdotta la funzione:  Full Screen spectrum scope display che è ricompresa anche nella Ver. 01-15 ultima per chi non avesse già fatto l’upgrade allora.

Fullscrenn-spectrum• Viene aggiunta una funzione a schermo pieno del campo di applicazione dell’analisi di Spettro sul Main Display TFT.
• Lo “schermo intero” viene memorizzato premendo il tasto “SELECT” per più di un secondo.(! ogni volta che si memorizza, il precedente contenuto viene sovrascritto e sostituito)

[Note by iØgej] The spectrum scope size increase is very poorly done. – Comparisons to the screens one finds on the Icom 7700 – 7600 or the Kenwood 990 or FlexRadio’s … are light years ahead. – You may be able to get the same size increase by placing a “magnifying glass” on the screen (still…. we did not!)

4.3.  As one would expect of a high 1st IF (“up-conversion”) superhet architecture, image and 1st IF rejection are superb (> 110 dB). These figures are unachievable with an in-band (“down-conversion”) 1st IF design.

Test A2: Reciprocal mixing dynamic range (RMDR): In this test, a strong “undesired” signal is injected into the receiver’s RF input at a fixed offset Δf from the operating frequency. (etc. see the complete pdf!)

Test Conditions: SSB mode, 2.4 kHz filter (IF DSP), preamp off (IPO), ATT off, DNR off, NB off, DNF off, Notch off, Contour off. AGC Slow, negative offset. Roofing filter: 3 kHz (R3). RMDR in dB = input power – MDS (both in dBm). The RF input power Pi is increased until the receiver noise floor increases by 3 dB, as measured at the audio output (etc. see the complete pdf!)

Δf  kHz 2 / Pi dBm -38 / RMDR dB 82 — Δf  kHz 5 / Pi dBm -30 / RMDR dB 90

4.1 It will be seen from Tables 2 (RMDR) and 3 (DR3) that at 2 kHz spacing, the measured 82 dB RMDR value values is slightly higher than measured DR3. This indicates that although the measurement is phase-noise limited, there is still a measurable component due to front-end non-linearity.
!! At 5 kHz spacing, RMDR and DR3 are 90 dB and 81 dB respectively, indicating a fairly rapid fall-off in phase noise between 2 and 5 kHz offset. (…… etc. see the complete pdf!)

4.6. As mentioned in the test descriptions above, no trace of ALC overshoot or spikes was observed at any time.  (…… etc. see the complete pdf!)

4.8. Overall, it is felt that the FTDX-1200 is a very good performer and an excellent buy in the mid price range

1) Full Screen spectrum scope display on the TFT Display
• Viene aggiunta una funzione a schermo pieno del campo di applicazione dell’analisi di Spettro sul Main Display TFT.
• Lo “schermo intero” viene memorizzato premendo il tasto “SELECT” per più di un secondo.(! ogni volta che si memorizza, il precedente contenuto viene sovrascritto e sostituito)
2) Split-Operation – change the TX  temporarily MAIN DIAL or RX [CLAR/VFO-B]
• Durante il funzionamento in “SPLIT” la frequenza TX può essere regolata temporaneamente con il MAIN DIAL, tenendo però pressato il tasto [TXW].
Altrettanto in questo modo la frequenza RX varierà girando però la manopola [CLAR/VFO-B] !! Setting of the TX/RX for SPLIT operation: accendere ON  [POWER] mentre si tiene pressato il tasto [SPLIT] per attivare questo modo di settaggio  con la variazione temporanea in Operazioni Split ….!! e… viceversa!

!! Si sta procedendo ad aggiornare solo 2 dei 4 firmware incorporati, con differenti software utility (Trasfer..) e 4 files a differenti  estensioni (SLF – dat – bin etc), nel Transceiver (Yaesu utilizza ancora qui il sistema  “multiple software systems installations”! rispetto alla Icom e Kenwood che usano, invece, un software a sistema unico di sviluppo). Quindi ignorare i passaggi ripetitivi (spegni, collega cavi, accendi, carica 1, ripristina e poi ancora, etc. etc.) previsti per il DSP e per la FFT (att. diverso da TFT!!) [..alla fine si rimane senza dita da pigiare contemporaneamente hi!!]

I don’t understand what Yaesu’s engineers are thinking!!
If I understand the specs correctly, you need to buy an optional interface (SCU-17) before you can perform firmware upgrades! Reading the brochure thoroughly I saw that the pretty Spectrum Scope (ASC) is not in real-time. The brochure says that the audio is muted during the sweeping that takes 300 msec (!!…. no receive audiois generated during sweeping, but as sweeping is done at an extremely high speed….etc.)

QST reviews the  FTDX-3000 on April, 2013 – An favorable overview of the YAESU FTdx3000 100W HF/50MHz Transceiver on the QST magazine. ARRL labs including high close-in IMD3 data, but only -82 dBc at 2 kHz RMDR figure.

NPR_va7oj-labsCon il Test NPR Adam, spiega che il Generatore di Rumore Bianco (W&G RS-50 il suo) immette un segnale a banda larga al connettore d’antenna e quindi carica tutti gli stati del ricevitore, il Front-end, i Filtri e l’eventuale Preselettore, simulando la risposta alla ricezione di multi-segnali del DUT in prova (come in realtà succede collegandovi un’antenna). Yaesu FTdx-3000D Firmware, new update Main CPU Ver. 0111 and TFT Ver. 0106 flash programming for the Transceiver. !!! (*) Note: FTdx-3000D now update Main Ver. 0112 03/29/2013 see the new page radiocronache >link)
Before installing new firmware, please verify your current version firmware with the following procedure:
(1st) press and hold the [POWER] key to turn ON the Transceiver, (2nd) while pressing and holding the [SCOPE] key, [GEN] key. [50] key, and [ENT] key on the FTDX-3000 front panel. The versions of each firmware will be displayed on the TFT main screen.

[Note] The rig has to be started in different ways for each of these two updates to work! The Yaesu “Firmware Upgrade Manual” (PDF) has the update procedure for all of the Firmware-modules (MAIN .SFL – DSP .dat – TFT .bin – FFT .dat), and for all Trasfer-softwares (!! italianoL’ultima voce dovrebbe consentire ora di bloccare sì il VFO (esempio A), ma adesso si permette in modo SPLIT (tenendo premuto il tasto TXW) di sintonizzare ancora il VFO (esempio il B), … una buona cosa quando si sta cercando di ascoltare le stazioni chiamanti nel Pile-Up … ora questo sarà di aiuto all’operatore ! (*) risoluzione di ulteriori problemi con il Firmware V.0112 (29.3.13) il link e più sopra.

If you already have EDSP V11.54 or V20.47, and MAIN V1.18 software versions, it is not necessary to update the FT-950 again! – The software versions can be displayed on the radio:

Find it behind the Kenwood TS-590S because close spaced DR was “only” 82 dB and Phase Noise limited (LO Noise dBc/Hz). I wonder if Yaesu will change their advertising claims? – [Note] Rob Sherwood has an excellent laboratory, but expect certainly also QST’s test results – (The QST’s measurement process differs from the Sherwood Labs approach)!

The Spectrum Scope has two modes: the auto mode monitors, and sweeps the band continually ! – Bandwidth of the spectrum scope may be set to any of six different spans: 20kHz, 50kHz, 100kHz, 200kHz, 500kHz, or 1MHz., and may operate in either Center or Fixed mode (like IC- 78 -77 -76-transceivers). The FTdx3000 also has an AF-FFT (Audio Frequency Fast Fourier Trasform) scope built-in (adgiusting the RX IF filter and the TX audio…) – Spectrum Scope Memory: 
The Spectrum Scope screen can be stored or recalled with one touch. Simultaneously the time information is recorded in the memory, so that the difference in activity may be reviewed and compared !

In the FTdx-3000D “Down Conversion” receiver construction is used. The  first IF frequency is 9 MHz. This makes possible narrow bandwidth crystal roofing filters (300 Hz ( optional), 600 Hz or 3 kHz) with a sharp shape factor that creates amazing multi-signal receiving performance.
