The new Icom ID-5100 dual band D-STAR/FM mobile which features a large, responsive touch screen LCD, Bluetooth connectivity and second station control through an Android device: Icom RS-MS1A !
Touch Screen, first seen on the IC-7100, now migrating to other models too: a touch display. Icom’s black and white screen LCD display seems a bit odd, in an era where color screens are default on almost any device! (see the Yaesu FTM-400D below) – The ID-5100 new DV/DV Dual-watch and Receives both FM/FM, FM/DV modes simultaneously (Monitors two DV signals & receives either channel! see below)
Nearest Repeater Search with GPS built-in – This system works in digital and now seems in analog mode! An interesting feature is “Nearest Repeater Search”, which acts a bit like the roaming function we know from cell phones and DMR radios with GPS built-in. (search the internal database based on your location!)

D-STAR & ID-5100 Quick-info & Features
D-STAR Protocol the linking is accomplished by the repeater controller, the gateway server and just recently the reflector. – When using this method, only the source radio’s signal path is specified. – In the new G2 Software an administrator can specify an alias that includes multiple nodes. – A user then specifies the alias in their [UR Call] and their signal is routed to all nodes that the administrator has specified (total of up to 11), the repeater sends a stream of data to each of the specified servers.
Latest software written by Robin, AA4RC d-Plus Linking with Reflectors and the multiple repeaters can all link to the same reflector (all traffic on one node is repeated to another node) – The ID-5100 has a new generation design and range of features including: • d-Plus reflector usability (can select “reflector” in to field) • Enhanced DR mode (also include analogue repeaters!?) • Added “Nearby Repeater Scan” in DR scan function • RS-MS1A Android application will be a free to use download. It controls the radio for DR mode operation, exchanging text messages/pictures and showing GPS location over Google Maps etc. (preliminary….see the official data and info)

D-STAR Satellite Getting Closer to Launch
The launch is currently proposed for late 2014, but the satellite is being assembled at this time. Check out the videos at on the AMSAT UK website (link).
AMSAT UK: The OUFTI-1 team have released videos of the integration of the amateur radio D-STAR GMSK CubeSat built by students at the University of Liege. – The team plan to use 145.950 MHz for a D-STAR and FSK AX.25 downlink and 145.980 MHz for a CW beacon. “Yaesu System Fusion” Dual Mode system by Yaesu Musen Co. provides digital communication features, such as image, text data and GPS position data using C4FM FDMA. – This C4FM FDMA (4-level FSK) digital mode is not compatible with D-STAR using the GMSK modulation. – Yaesu Fusion Lineup: FT1DR, FTM-400DR (Amercica) FTM-400DE (Europe) & DR-1 C4FM/FM Repeater.
The FTM-400D operate in: V/D mode (Voice/Data simultaneous communication mode 6.5+6.5 kHz) – Voice FR mode (Voice Full Rate Mode 12.5 kHz bandwidth) – Data FR mode (Voice Full Rate Mode 12.5 kHz) – Data FR mode (High Speed data Communication mode 12.5 kHz) – Analog FM mode (typical FM mode 12.5 kHz). The C4FM 9.6 kbps data baud rate speed. The D-STAR V/U 4.8 kbps data boud rate speed – Digital Voice (DV) stream contains both digitised voice (3.6 kbps including error correction and digital data 1.2 kbps) – The Digital Data (DD) stream, used only on 1.2 GHz (ID-1 Transceiver), is entirely data with a bit rate of 128 kbps!!
