Icom IC-7610, IC-R8600, IC-R30 and ID-51 PLUS2 models at Tokyo Ham Fair 2016

AllaTokyo Ham Fair 2016, lo scorso 20 agosto 2016, Icom Inc. Co ha annunciato 4 nuovi prodotti: il Transceiver IC-7610, il Ricevitore larga banda IC-R8600 desktop, il Ricevitore portatile IC-R30 e una nuova versione del palmare V/UHF ID-51A / E Plus2 D-STAR.

At Tokyo Ham Fair 2016, on 20 August 2016, Icom Inc. Co announced 4 new products: the IC-7610 Transceiver, the IC-R8600 Desktop Receiver, the IC-R30 Handheld Receiver and the ID-51A/E PLUS2 V/UHF D-STAR handheld.

New IC-R8600 wideband receiver covers 0.01-3000 MHz in analog and decodes multiple digital protocols, including D-STAR, NXDN, dPMR and APCO P25 – It has a large 4.3″ touch screen color display with real-time spectrum scope and waterfall. The circuit employs modern FPGA/DSP architecture with superheterodyne circuitry, Looks great!

The new IC-7610 HF+50 MHz 100W Transceiver is the successor to the IC-7600 – Icom had just announced the main features (that take advantage of the new Icom features introduced into the IC-7300) High definition realtime TFT color display – Touch screen interface – Direct sampling SDR platform – Dual watch – Built-In Antenna Tuner –  Connection for external display – BNC connector for Transverter, and RX IN/OUT – USB Ports and Ethernet connections.

The IC-7300 employs an RF direct sampling system,  where RF signals are directly convert to digital data (ADC). Then processed in the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) and in the DSP >D/A. – IC-7300 DSP an TMS 320C6745DPTPA3 (idem to DSP rx of the IC-7850 – 7851) at 2250 MFLOPS –  370MHz !

The Appendix 1 presents results of RF lab test suite performed on the radio.

ADC Clip Levels – (light the on-screen OVF red icon) OVF indication occurs only when a strong out-of-channel signal is present. In-channel signals cause AGC action which attenuates the signal at the Rx ADC imput  (LTC2208-14) via an diode PIN BAP70Q (D1251).

Recirpocal Mixing Noise occurs in a direct-sampling SDR receiver when the phase-noise sidebands of the Rx ADC clock mix with strong signals close in frequency to the wanted signal, producing unwanted noise products in the detection channel and degrading the receiver sensitivity.

Icom IC-7300 is Boorn at Tokyo 2015!「IC-7300でHFの扉を開こう」it adopts the RF Direct Sampling System – Instead of the “conventional” superheterodyne system, Icom utilizes the RF Direct Sampling System – From the brochure, the Phase Noise at 2 kHz offset is -130 dBc/Hz this equates about to 103 dB RMDR. – (dati interessanti e prospettive, da verificare !)-

The FT-991 is an traditional superheterodine quad-bands! The  new IC-7300 adopt the latest  RF direct sampling method (BPF >A/D >FPGA >DSP >D/A – see the Icom block-diagram below) and it is equipped with a high-performance real-time band scope and waterfall on large color TFT touch-screen display!

Q/A at Ham Fair presentation Q1: What FPGA are you using? Xilinx or Altera? A engineer: Cannot tell // Q2: What is the A/D converter and what is its sampling frequency? A engineer: ICOM is still investigating a couple of candidates. The A/D converter sampling frequency is 122MHz.  (source: TOHOKU2008 ) (ADC’s …e.g. LTC2208 or 2209)

According to the engineer at the presentation, ICOM will start shipping IC-7300 by the end of 2015. The target price is under 150,000 JPY

FDM-DUO – the DDS SDR design and build quality is Italian quality!

The FDM-DUO that provides an advanced Direct Digital Samplin (DDS) SDR Compact HF 50MHz QRP Transceiver. Covering all bands from 9kHz trough to 50MHz, with 5 watts RF outup and multiple receivers.  That can be used in standalone mode (not PC) or it can be entirely computer controlled – The design and build quality is Italian quality !

Computer operation – The real flexibility of the FDM-DUO was realised when I combined the rig with the Elad FDM-SW2 SDR Software on external PC – I had access to up to 8 software receivers plus the standalone receiver making a total of nine, which is more thanI could ever use!

The antenna signal is applied to some ESD protection and 5 anti-aliasing filter before being passed to the main analogue to digital converter (ADC). Elad use the popular LTC2165, 16-bit ADC thet’s clock at 122.88MHz to provide confortable sampling (serial data stream runs at just under 2Gb/s) of the entire RF spectrum to 9kHz through to 54MHz.

Elad uses a Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA and the decimated outup in standalone mode is 192ksps and the tuning range wold be abaut 180kHz (output of the Spartan 6 is passed to an STM32F429 ARM microcontroller) – However, when operating the FDM-DUO using the included FDM-SW2 software, the decimation range can be changed in six steps up to a maximum of 6.144Msps.

FTDX-1200 & FTDX-3000 Now Adj. RF Power SSB With CAR Knob – Analog or SDR RTX?

FTDX-1200 Update Ver. 01.09 and FTDX-3000 Update Ver. 01.19  (08/07/2014) now adjusts the TX RF Power output for SSB & CW modes with the [PROC/CAR] knob on front panel.

After loaded new firmware, the Menu item now gives “177 TX GNRL” option to selects: TX PWR or PROC CONTROL. (Default setting: TX PWR) – New firmware includes additional improvements of functions and optimization.

Dopo aver caricato i nuovi software, il passo del menù “177” prevede ora l’opzione per il controllo continuo della potenza TX RF output anche  in SSB. Oppure del livello del Processore, con l’uso diretto della manopola [PROC/CAR] così come avveniva prima solo per il modo modo CW.  Le altre istruzioni in modo diverso dalla SSB rimangono invariate. Yaesu dichiara che, nei nuovi firmware, sono inclusi altri miglioramenti di funzionamento e altre ottimizzazione.

Manufacturers such as designing in 2014 for us amateurs? -New SDR Direct Sampling Radio with latest digital technoIogy will advance very rapidly! Are the Manufacturers Japanese ready to tackle a software project of this magnitude?!
It makes logical sense that Icom’s, Yaesu’s next product should be a stand-alone SDR. – The superheterodyne with IF-DSP architecture has reached a point of maturity beyond which little, if any improvement is possible! –

Who will be leader in SDR Radio – See what happens over the Ham Fair 2014

SDR Direct Sampling Radio with latest digital technoIogy will advance very rapidly! – I think I would probably wait and see what happens over the  Ham Fair 2014 will be held at Tokyo on August 23rd and 24th, maybe Icom Inc. or someone else in Japan  will announce an even more fantastic SDR!?
The big question is this, though: Are the Japanese ready to tackle a software project of this magnitude? ….(icom I will do it!)

Vista l’evoluzione tecnologica nel settore, ora ha senso logico che il prossimo prodotto di Icom Inc. dovrebbe essere un SDR stand-alone! –  L’architettura Superhet/DSP ha raggiunto oramai la maturità e non credo che Icom Inc., o qualsiasi altro produttore, possano ottenere ulteriori performance utili se non si passa all’impiego di circuiti SDR total-based!

FlexRadio Systems USA scrive: we are the leader in SDR (ad in QST!) quindi continua con altre innovazioni – Infatti un’altra novità “coming soon” dopo l’ultimo Flex-6300, atteso in consegna per Settembre 2014, sembra essere questa FlexPAD, una flessibile interfaccia utente per il controllo remoto della serie Flex-6000’s tramite collegamenti in rete LAN (locale) oppure in WAN (remoto). Funziona con tasti e manopole e con l’inserimento di un iPad in touch-screen (non fornito!) una vera integrazione di tecnologie diverse e solo se vorrai potrai usare anche il tuo Computer!

Direct conversion in RX/TX mode, in HF/VHF bands – Frequency range 0-75MHz, 95-155MHz- Wide band spectrum panadapter up to 80MHz. – Two independent receivers- In the first model SunSDR-MB1 two independent receivers are realized inside software – (In a next more expensive’s model will installed two ADC’s with possibility of diversity reception) – High dynamic range of receiver: up to 120dB in the HF, and up to 116dB in the VHF.- Sensitivity, uV: 0.07 (Preamp on) / 0.13 (Preamp off).
