Who will be leader in SDR Radio – See what happens over the Ham Fair 2014

SDR Direct Sampling Radio with latest digital technoIogy will advance very rapidly! – I think I would probably wait and see what happens over the  Ham Fair 2014 will be held at Tokyo on August 23rd and 24th, maybe Icom Inc. or someone else in Japan  will announce an even more fantastic SDR!?
The big question is this, though: Are the Japanese ready to tackle a software project of this magnitude? ….(icom I will do it!)

Vista l’evoluzione tecnologica nel settore, ora ha senso logico che il prossimo prodotto di Icom Inc. dovrebbe essere un SDR stand-alone! –  L’architettura Superhet/DSP ha raggiunto oramai la maturità e non credo che Icom Inc., o qualsiasi altro produttore, possano ottenere ulteriori performance utili se non si passa all’impiego di circuiti SDR total-based!

FlexRadio Systems USA scrive: we are the leader in SDR (ad in QST!) quindi continua con altre innovazioni – Infatti un’altra novità “coming soon” dopo l’ultimo Flex-6300, atteso in consegna per Settembre 2014, sembra essere questa FlexPAD, una flessibile interfaccia utente per il controllo remoto della serie Flex-6000′s tramite collegamenti in rete LAN (locale) oppure in WAN (remoto). Funziona con tasti e manopole e con l’inserimento di un iPad in touch-screen (non fornito!) una vera integrazione di tecnologie diverse e solo se vorrai potrai usare anche il tuo Computer!

IC-7100 User Evalutation and Full Test Report plus IC-7100/IC-7000 Feature Comparison by VA7OJ, Adam. (! see link +below!) – See the Video demo by GØTAN Engineering staf at ML&S Ltd UK (link +below) - I think that hams using D-STAR will find it a nice addition to their base or mobile setups for DV (digital-voice & data) mode on the 28MHz, 50MHz and VHF UHF bands. The IC-7100 display contrast ratio is also quite nice. I wish it had a color screen as some others have noted. I don’t think much is missed by not having a color screen, as there’s no information displayed that twould benefit from color. The display resistive touch screen is easy operation!

This Report describes the evaluation of IC-7100 (S/N 02001352) from a user perspective. - Appendix 1) is a comparison of IC-7100 and IC-7000 features in tabular form. – Appendix 2) presents results of an RF lab test suite performed on the radio. Adam also writes: “I was able to spend a few days with the IC-7100 in my ham-shack, and thus had the opportunity to exercise the radio’s principal features and evaluate its on-air behavior”. – (thanks to Adam).

The DR key accesses a D-STAR repeater setup menu, facilitating D-Star service configuration. The DR mode is the “enhanced” user interface for VHF/UHF D-STAR operation. For HF D-STAR, or for those more accustomed to the basic D-STAR operation, simply selecting DV will give access to the D-STAR digital mode.

IC-9100 Firmware Rev. E2 & IC-7410 Firmware Rev. 1 are now downloadable from the Icom Inc. Osaka, Japan Global-website of 1 & 8 August, 2013. The new Firmware corrects a number of issue and offers improvements to the two radio (see the all Icom specs and instructions.) – D-STAR the QSO Party 2013 … 10 lucky winner! see below.
In addition, a new USB Driver Rev. 1.20 (adds USB3 port and W8) & Cloning software CS-9100 Rev. 1.01 & Remote Control RS-BA1 Rev. 1.41 can be downloaded. The USB Driver supports the following radios (as of July 2013) IC-7100/IC-7200/IC-7410/IC-7600/IC-9100.

An RS-BA1® remote control system consists of at least one PC, which is used as a Base station (Server) and at least one PC, which is used as a Remote station (Client). Both PCs have to be connected with a network and VAC. The Icom USB driver must be installed.

[Note] When you use the RS-BA1 version 1.41, the USB driver must be the USB 3.0 compatible version. Download the USB driver Ver. 1.20 !!  - You must have the RS-BA1 software installed BEFORE you update to revision 1.41.

Since cannot turn the radio ON or OFF with RS-BA1 Remote Control operation, the radio must be turned ON. – [Note] there other control board and software (no Icom brand) to control power to equipment or other options, it works together with Icom RS-BA1 or HRD software etc.

FDM-DUO a new SDR rtx made in Italy – ELAD has displayed his “little SDR Tranceiver” at Ham Radio Friedrichshafen 2013. Quite interesting concept to have a stand alone QRP rig at 192kHz sampling, combined with an extended SDR if you use it with a Computer.

The current Rev. #12/#13 version incorporates the new PA-UNIT and LPF modules, and in addition several other modules are also “up-rev.” from the earlier version.

The IC-7700 uses a STAC2942 power amplifier in common source push-pull configuration (common source). The power amplifier provides a eliable 200W of output power up to 54MHz. – The STAC2942B is a gold metallized N-channel MOS field-effect RF power transistor. [Rumors] It is said that the manufacturer of the MRF-150 used in the 7700′s series PA Unit, has recently discontinued this supply. This event has probably brought Icom to design a new PA Unit based on  the new DMOS STAC2942 ©STMicroelectronics parts.

IC-9100 Checking the Version installed – (idem for the IC-7410)

IC-9100_checking-version1) – Press and hold [F4] and [F5] while turning [ON] the IC-9100 – (idem for the IC-7410)
2) – Do NOT release [F4] and [F5] until you have READ the Version results (3)
3) – Results will appear at the bottom of the display

Results for latest V.E1 - F: 3.01-000 = Front (currently no updates) - M: 3.42-E00 = Main (currently no updates) - DM: 3.03 <00> = DSP Main (Previous version should read 3.02) - DS: 3.04 <00> = DSP Sub (Previous version should read 3.03) – (!! Read the Icom information)

[Note] for the IC-7410 HF/50MHz  is NOT granted any firmware, for now

The IC-9100 Firmware V.E1 has just been posted 13/3/2012. – This upgrade is applied from a PC via the rear-panel [USB B] port. – The IC-9100’s firmware can be updated if desired. By updating the firmware, new function(s) can be added and performance can be improved. – This capability ends months of speculation: “Is it or isn’t it?”  - - See the Utility Link, the QST Review, the latest NPR rx Testing (3/2013) by VA7OJ  and RS-BA1 remote control … below !

Con questo terminano le incertezze e le voci varie, sì l’IC-9100 ha il suo Firmware aggiornabile!
Come verificare la Versione del Firmware nell’IC-9100 e IC-7410: vedere comandi riportati più sopra; –  I dati identificativi dell’ultima Versione E1 rilascita da ICOM Inc. solo per l’IC-9100,  ove già installata a bordo oppure  dopo aver fatto l’aggiornamento, apparirano sulla parte bassa del Display con una serie di valori (vedere più sopra) - [Nota] Per l’IC-7410 non risultano ancora aggiornamenti ad oggi – (NB: Informarsi tramite tutte le news ufficiali di Icom!)

Il firmware del IC-9100 può essere aggiornato, se uno lo desidera, tramite un PC e via porta [USB-B] sul pannello posteriore. Con l’aggiornamento del firmware, naturalmente, possono essere aggiunte nuove funzioni e migliorate le prestazioni via, via da parte del costruttore. -

Con il Test NPR Adam, dimostra che il generatore di rumore bianco immette un segnale a banda larga che carica tutti gli stati del ricevitore, il Front-end, i Filtri e l’eventuale Preselettore, simulando la risposta alla ricezione di multi-segnali del DUT (come in realtà succede collegandovi un’antenna). – Il rumore bianco viene rimosso alla frequenza sintonizzata del ricevitore da un adatto filtro notch, inserito in serie. – A causa della distorsione dei circuiti del ricevitore (DUT imput), questa tacca (notch) tende a riempirsi con prodotti di intermodulazione, i cui effetti verranno oppurtunamente misurati in uscita (DUT output).

Reciprocal Mixing Testing: What Is It?
You may notice two new color bars in the “Key Measurements Summary” at the top of this review. These are for Reciprocal Mixing Dynamic Range (RMDR), with measurements at 20 and 2 kHz spacing. …….omissis …….. Reciprocal mixing is noise generated in a superheterodyne receiver when noise from the local oscillator (LO) mixes with strong, adjacent signals.

RS-BA1® Remote control system (QST… Now for the Really Cool Stuff )

An RS-BA1® remote control system consists of at least one PC, which is used as a Base station (Server) and at least one PC, which is used as a Remote station (Client). Both PCs have to be connected with a network and VAC. The Icom USB driver must be installed.

YAESU: early 2012 release a Digital C4FM (4-level FSK) Handheld – The New Brand logos

YAESU Amateur Radio Division of Vertex Standard, has relesed 27 December, 2011 an extensive Publication in PDF:  “A Digital Communications Guide for Amateur Radio Operators” (on its website) – The publication confirm that Yaesu positions itself for digital radio battle against Icom D-STAR business !!

Big news still: YAESU writes “early 2012, we will release a C4FM (4-level FSK) FDMA Handy-Talky and Mobile Transceiver into the Amateur radio market” !

News update: The new Brand Logos already appear on website of the ©Yaesu USA Inc. (earlier name: Vertex Standard US Headquarters)

[Note]: the recent corporate reorganization, that brings Vertex Standard’s LMR (land mobile radio) division to Motorola, and breaks Yaesu off into a independent corporation again, known as YAESU MUSEN  Co., Ltd,  for Amateur, Marine and Air-band business divisions. – The US subsidiary wil be YAESU USA Inc.  [please wait for the any official information !]

Yaesu Digital radio system that uses C4FM (4-level FSK), and is very popular in professional commercial markets, is known ad DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) [note: no DRM…!) is used primarily in the European and Asian markets, and is also known as dPRM.

Currently GSMK modulation is still being used by D-STAR in 2004, was introduced to the Ham bands. – ICOM D-STAR was the first in the game to promote digital voice and data specifically for amateur radio, and they have quite the stronghold right now – It will be interesting to see ICOM’s reaction to YAESU’s entry to the digital radio market that appears to be early 2012, we will release a C4FM FDMA Handy-Talk- (!! please see the image up! click its to enlarge).
