FDM-DUO a new SDR rtx made in Italy – ELAD has displayed his “little SDR Tranceiver” at Ham Radio Friedrichshafen 2013. Quite interesting concept to have a stand alone QRP rig at 192kHz sampling, combined with an extended SDR if you use it with a Computer.


It is a Direct Sampling SDR receviver (is an RF Sampler) with a DDC on a FPGA, and a Cortex ARM DSP module for filtering and demodulation in stand-alone mode. In RX and TX directions it is a fully SDR technology. WiNRADiO introducing its new SDR EXCALIBUR “Ultra” (beta version)

[Note] Kenwood ARCP-590 itself functions well although the program’s GUI is not nearly as well conceived as HRD Ham Radio Deluxe!
[Note by G3RNW]….. The TS-590S is a complex transceiver, and with a few moments of random menu fiddling you can easily transform the transmitted audio from superb to terrible !!

TS-590S Circuit description and internal views: From the preamplifier (Q236) to the second IF frequency (10.695MHz/11.374MHz) (see the block diagram picture)
On 15, 20, 40, 80 or 160 meters, the Kenwood TS-590S employs down conversion for the first IF (11.374 MHz when receiving in CW/FSK/SSB modes down conversion is selected automatically) – The signal from the preamplifier (Q236) is spread into 2 paths: [RX-1] and [RX-2], depending on the frequency band and mode (down conversion [RX-1] is selected automatically).

 The [RX-1] path signal passes through the LPF for IF trap, is integrated with LO1 (12.495 to 32.195MHz) in the quadbalance 1st mixer (Q263 to Q266), and is then converted to the 1st IF (11.374MHz). The 1st IF signal passes through the 2-pole MCF (XF301 passband width is 6kHz) and enters the Roofing filter unit and second IF amplifier.

 The [RX-2] path signal passes through the LPF for IF trap, is integrated with LO1 (73.120 to 133.095MHz) in the quadbalance 1st mixer (Q321 to Q324), and is then converted to the 1st IF (73.095MHz). The 1st IF signal passes through the 2-pole MCF (XF371 passband width is 15kHz). The amplified signal is mixed with LO2 (62.4MHz) in the second mixer (D422, D423), converted to the second IF (10.695MHz), and then enters the Roofing filter unit and second IF amplifier.

The Kenwood S/N format used from 1999 until approximately August 2008 is numeric and the S/N format adopted from approximately August 2008 is alphanumeric.
La Kenwood ha utilizzato un formato numerico per il S/N fino ad Agosto 2008 e poi un formato alfanumerico dal 2008, che prosegue attualmente.

G6ISY ha predisposto un programma di calcolo, in formato Javascript, in cui inserendo le prime tre cifre o cifre/lettere dal proprio S/N si ottiene la data di fabbrica dell’apparato TS-2000! (…. see the link below)

QST reviews the TS-590S on May, 2011 – Top class performance at a middle price

QST Magazine reviews the TS-590S on May, 2011 by N0AX, H. Ward Silver . The review radio originally shipped with firmware Ver 1.00 (S/N B0900113 September, 2010) but was upgraded to firmware Ver. 1.02 for final testing on the ARRL Laboratory.

N0AX also writes: The TS-590 is a very interesting superhetero-dyne that operates as either a double-down conversion (RX1), used on the 160, 80, 40, 20 and 15 meter bands for SSB, CW and FSK only; Triple up-conversion (RX2) chain on other bands, including 10 and 6 meters is used for wider IF BW such as for AM and FM, in addition to the SSB, CW and FSK.

I found the adjustable AGC action to be quite clean — no clicks, thumps or pops. It’s possible for a very close signal to be inside the roofing filter but outside a narrower DSP filter, causing the audio level to fall dramatically, but the signal has to be really close.
When either NR system is turned up to its most aggressive setting audible artifacts are created (NR2 artifacts sound like the band is “boiling”) but both are far better than the noise they have replaced.

The only problem I encountered was a significant power overshoot on the leading edge of a first dot or dash before recovering to the intended level. That caused the ACOM Series amplifier to trip offline unless we reduced drive, dropping amp output to 800-1000 W. – The problem was eliminated by a Ver. 1.02 firmware upgrade  from Kenwood and verified by testing with the same amplifier at W1AW at the legal limit. —

QST fa il test al TS-590S su Maggio 2011 – Top performance ad un prezzo medio basso

QST Magazine n. 5/2011,  esamina il nuovo Kenwood con N0AX, H. Ward Silver; Un transceiver di classe top a prezzo medio basso scrivono. – Il TS-590S esaminato è arrivato alla ARRL in imballo originale con il Firmware 1st Ver. 1.00 (S/N B0900113 di Settembre, 2010), poi  per il test finale è stato aggiornato con la nuova Ver. 1.02 nello stesso Laboratorio della ARRL.

Power overshoot? Nell’impiego del TS-590S con amplificatori, in particolare con la serie ACOM, sono stati riscontrati problemi di picchi di potenza di millisecondi all’atto dell’inizio trasmissione, questo problema risulta risolto da Kenwood con il nuovo Firmware Ver. 1.02 del 20.01.2011 che al punto 5) riporta la questione tra le varie migliorie apportate con l’aggiornamento ..Vedere il link più sopra che porta alla pagina web con info sul Firmware 1.02 e al Test completo del TS-590S di RadCom di Gennaio 2011 della RSGB

TS-590S Kenwood firmware Ver.1.02 Last updated Jan. 20, 2011. It’s well worth an upgrade !

Updated items : (Version 1.01 to Version 1.02) Revises the following symptoms:

1. In [SSB-DATA] mode, Speech Processor might not be disabled internally.
2. At the end of TX tune mode, carrier output returns to normal mode level after a short delay.
3. When the TS-590S is turned ON, the USB port connection may be unstable.
4. When the built-in electronic keyer is set to Mode A, CW keying may not work properly.
5. TX rise time power spike activates some linear amplifiers’ input power protections.
(The firmware Ver.1.02 revises the ALC response characteristics to reduce the power spike.)
6. When a separate RX ANT is connected, TX output power may be fed back to the RX ANT connector and might affect internal circuits.
(The firmware Ver.1.02 deactivates (opens) RX ANT relay every time the radio transmits.)

Kenwood TS-590S Peter Hart reviews the latest HF/50MHz transceiver on ©RadCom January 2011 – The RSGB Radio Society of Great Britain Members’ magazine.
The figures measured of RadCom  are excellent, similar to or better then top-end radios costing two to four times as much!

The TS-590S is a single receiver tuning 30 kHz to 60MHz, although the performances is specified within the amateur bands. – The menu system is very comprehensive with 88 items, it uses scrolling display annotation. – Menu items allow for both fast and slow linear switching separely for HF and 50MHz but there is only one linear control line. – For use with transverters, the display can be set to indicate the trasverter frequency.  Three digits are available for the MHz segment, eg 144 or 432.

Measurements – Peter evaluates separately two path: RX1 down-conversion and RX2 up-conversion.  ————– (Short summary data)
The rejection of IFs and image for the RX1 down-conversion path was typically 75dB to 90dB (1*) – For the RX2 up-conversion path these figures were typically better than 90dB. – He searched carefully for other spurious responses as DDS circuits tend to be prone to this problem. – RX2 was very clean with no responses less than 80dB down. – RX1 was exceptionally clean with no other responses less than 100dB down (2*).
– (1*) FTdx-5000 the 9MHz IF rejection on 10MHz it was only 54dB, and on 7MHz it was 74dB. – (2*) FTdx-5000 the first mixer image was only down by 55dB to 70dB (>RadCom  June, 2010 review)

IP3 Intercept and IMD3 Dinamic figures for bands (1.8 3.5 7 14 21 MHz) that use RX-1 the measurement was made 2.3kHz bandwidth. By measuring in 2.8kHz  bandwidth all bands (1.3 3.5 7 10 14 18 21 24 28 50 MHz) use  RX2  path.

Close-in IP3 and IMD3 figures were made in 500Hz bandwidth with RX1 on 7MHz and RX2 on 10MHz.

– RX1 uses the 500Hz bandwidth roofing filter. – RX2 the 2.7kHz bandwidth filter at the second IF and 15kHz rofing filter at the first IF. – The results for RX1 path are really excellente, achiving 103dB IMD3 at 2kHz spacing and 90dB at 1kHz! – The results for RX2 path show the efect of the wider roofing filters (15kHz+2.7kHz). Then at 2kHz and below the signal enter the second IF filter passaband and the AGC takes effect.

A somewhat complex AGC system is used, detecting signal level in three places within the DSP signal path. – The close-in strong signal performance in some cases may be limited  by the AGC  when a strong signal falling inside the filter roofing but still outside  of the final channel filter will result in AGC action. – This can be heard as a quietening of the receiver from a very strong signal  just outside of the channel passaband. – The effect is most noticeable with the wider roofing filters and is not an issue with the 500Hz roofing filter in circuit. – [Note] clik the thumbnails to enlarge!

The cooling system features a pair of 60×60 mm fans, the same size as on the previous model. Having two fans provides sufficient air flow at low rpm, ensuring quiet operation. 1) IF-DSP TMS320C6726B – The TS-590S employs DSP from the IF stage onward. Kenwood was the fi rst to offer DSP-based IF AGC in an Amateur radio (TS-870) and this DSP technology has been further enhanced for the TS-590S, resulting in the development of a unique approach to IF AGC.

2 – 4) Roofing Filter BW type up/down conv. – The TS-590S comes equipped with a 500 Hz and 2.7 KHz BW 6-pole MCF. This results in superb dynamic range when adjacent signals are present, performance that was not previously possible using up conversion

3)  IMD3  level  to 14.2MHz – Mode CW, BW500Hz, Pre-Amp OFF , Two-Tone Spacing (Variable 2 to 100kHz) – See the IMD3 diagram,  the orange line marks = 106 dB !!  So even when an interfering signal approaches the target frequency, a virtually flat dynamic range is maintained.

The innovative Receiving scheme: Kenwood Down/Up conversion in a single receiver! (almost like the Elecraft K3 – TenTec OrionII and at least Yeasu FTdx5K )

On the 15, 20, 40, 80 or 160 meter band, the TS-590S employs down conversion for the first IF (11.374 MHz), when receiving in CW/FSK/SSB modes down conversion is selected automatically. Having the 1st Roofing Filter (6 kHz BW) directly after the Mixer enhances the noise blanker’s ability to deal with adjacent off-frequency signals. What really determines RX performance is the 2nd Roofi ng Filter (2.7 kHz or 500 Hz), after the post amplifier. Follows the 2nd IF  (24kHz ) for Digital Signal Processing with new approach to IF AGC control. [!! Test drive the transceiver, will tell the truth]

No uses traditional PLL and VCO – For the 1st local oscillator frequency (25.374 MHz), instead of employing conventional PLL/VCO, the output of a DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) is supplied directly to the following 1st Mixer.

Our best info about Kenwood’s HF radio plans is that next year (probably at Dayton 2010) they will bring out a new Mid-priced radio (abaut 2000€) that replaces the TS-570 series, at which time they will start designing a new flag-ship, High-end HF +6m radio (abaut 4000/5000€) that could come out as early as 2011….
