The IC-7300 is now supported (including new IP+ command and real-time spectrum scope screen with waterfal (like IC-7850/51) and other general improvements…. more info to Icom Inc. support web page).

You must have a previous version of the RS-BA1 software installed BEFORE you can update to version 1.91 (v. previous you purchase) RS-BA1が7300に対応する (ver.1.90 for Japanese users).

New [IP+] Function improves the receiver IMD and the 3rd order intercept point (IP3) performance. When a weak signal is received adjacent to strong interference the ADC is optimized against signal distorsion.

THe IC-7300’s RMDR (reciprocal mixing dynamic range) and Phase Noise characterstics are improved about 15dB (at 1 kHz frquence spacing) comparate to the IC-7200.

 Audio Scope Function can be used to observe varius AF (audio frequency) characteristics: compressor level, filter width, notch filter width and keying waveform in the CW mode in the FFT scope with the waterfall function and the oscilloscope.

Icom IC-7300 BASIC MANUAL should make interesting reading.

Icom datasheet says they are using technology found in SDR’s (and other devices) – Direct Sampling SDR combined with a Legacy Superheterodyne back end running a 36 kHz IF & DSP – Real-time Spectrum scope plus an multi-functions display touch-screen. 

Icom probably choose to reuse existing DSP’s software developed and engineered for previous latest radios rather than “start from scratch” for their new generation radio starting in IC-7300.

Per questo, Adam Farsom, VA7OJ ha proposto di usare come standard il metodo IFSS (Interference-Free Signal Strength) per il test IMD (Two-Tone Intermodulation Dinamic Range) in ricevitori a campionamento-diretto (Direct-sampling SDR). – Adam, VA7OJ wrote a terrific article in the latest March/April 2015 issue of QEX Magazine. – I wish ARRL would standardize on tests, and preferably use the (NPR) Noise Power Ratio test methodology.

Dynamic range (blocking, IMD and Reciprocal Mixing, related to Local Oscillator noise*) is a major limitation of receiver performance. italianoLo FTdx-1200 condivide l’aspetto esterno e le dimensioni del fratello-cugino FTdx-3000 che però utilizza la down-conversion in IF.  L’FTdx-1200 ha una diversa architettura per il circuito del ricevitore con la up-conversion in IF. – Come evidenziano anche i test di QST e di VA7OJ, Adam l’FTdx-3000 presenta numeri più performanti, l’FTdx-1200 ottiene valori riscontrabili, sia nel FT-950 che in  molti altri ricetrasmettitori recenti di costo medio basso. Quindi si può dire che si presenta con buone prestazioni, ma non fino ai livelli del ‘3000 o del ‘5000 dello stesso produttore! –

Il FTdx -1200 con il suo Display a colori da 4,3″ TFT offre una analisi di spettro che opera in una modalità intermittente. Cioè, automaticamente e in modo veloce (300 ms) sottrae una frazione al ricevitore e fa la scansione (sweep), bloccando l’audio del ricevitore. – Tra le veloci scansioni , mostra l’ultimo “snapshot” prelevato nell’intervallo settato (in due modi Select or Auto mode). –  Se si acquista la scheda opzionale FFT-1, la portata dello spettro può anche funzionare come un oscilloscopio per osservare attentamente sia il segnale audio ricevuto, sia il segnale audio trasmesso con il dominio del tempo in frequenza (cascata = waterfall) (AF FFT Audio Frequency Fast Fourier Transform). [Note] There are four different Software installations (Yaesu still uses the multiple software systems installations! on the FTdx-3000, Icom and Kenwood instead use a unified software environment) – Each one must be followed carefully. – Installing the wrong type software may cause difficulties. !! You are only doing the Main-CPU and TFT updates.
[Note] The rig has to be started in different ways for each of these two updates to work!  The Yaesu “Firmware Upgrade Manual” has the update procedure for all of the Firmware-Modules & extention type (MAIN .SFL – DSP .dat – TFT .bin – FFT .dat), and for all Trasfer-Softwares (!! The IC-7100 display contrast ratio is also quite nice. I wish it had a color screen as some others have noted. I don’t think much is missed by not having a color screen, as there’s no information displayed that twould benefit from color. The display resistive touch screen is easy operation!

This Report describes the evaluation of IC-7100 (S/N 02001352) from a user perspective. – Appendix 1) is a comparison of IC-7100 and IC-7000 features in tabular form. – Appendix 2) presents results of an RF lab test suite performed on the radio. The DR key accesses a D-STAR repeater setup menu, facilitating D-Star service configuration. The DR mode is the “enhanced” user interface for VHF/UHF D-STAR operation. For HF D-STAR, or for those more accustomed to the basic D-STAR operation, simply selecting DV will give access to the D-STAR digital mode.

4.3.  As one would expect of a high 1st IF (“up-conversion”) superhet architecture, image and 1st IF rejection are superb (> 110 dB). These figures are unachievable with an in-band (“down-conversion”) 1st IF design.

Test A2: Reciprocal mixing dynamic range (RMDR): In this test, a strong “undesired” signal is injected into the receiver’s RF input at a fixed offset Δf from the operating frequency. (etc. see the complete pdf!)

Test Conditions: SSB mode, 2.4 kHz filter (IF DSP), preamp off (IPO), ATT off, DNR off, NB off, DNF off, Notch off, Contour off. AGC Slow, negative offset. Roofing filter: 3 kHz (R3). RMDR in dB = input power – MDS (both in dBm). The RF input power Pi is increased until the receiver noise floor increases by 3 dB, as measured at the audio output (etc. see the complete pdf!)

Δf  kHz 2 / Pi dBm -38 / RMDR dB 82 — Δf  kHz 5 / Pi dBm -30 / RMDR dB 90

4.1 It will be seen from Tables 2 (RMDR) and 3 (DR3) that at 2 kHz spacing, the measured 82 dB RMDR value values is slightly higher than measured DR3. This indicates that although the measurement is phase-noise limited, there is still a measurable component due to front-end non-linearity.
!! At 5 kHz spacing, RMDR and DR3 are 90 dB and 81 dB respectively, indicating a fairly rapid fall-off in phase noise between 2 and 5 kHz offset. (…… etc. see the complete pdf!)

4.6. As mentioned in the test descriptions above, no trace of ALC overshoot or spikes was observed at any time.  (…… etc. see the complete pdf!)

4.8. Overall, it is felt that the FTDX-1200 is a very good performer and an excellent buy in the mid price range

FTdx-3000_adds-full-screen-functionYaesu USA ha gli ultimi aggiornamenti del Firmware FTdx-3000D con la Ver. 01-14 Main-CPU (+utility FSW018_V101) e la Ver. 01-07 TFT (+utility TFW) rilasciate in data 07/Luglio/2013 (Yaesu, download dal settore files)
1) Full Screen spectrum scope display on the TFT Display
• Viene aggiunta una funzione a schermo pieno del campo di applicazione dell’analisi di Spettro sul Main Display TFT.
• Lo “schermo intero” viene memorizzato premendo il tasto “SELECT” per più di un secondo.(! ogni volta che si memorizza, il precedente contenuto viene sovrascritto e sostituito)
2) Split-Operation – change the TX  temporarily MAIN DIAL or RX [CLAR/VFO-B]
• Durante il funzionamento in “SPLIT” la frequenza TX può essere regolata temporaneamente con il MAIN DIAL, tenendo però pressato il tasto [TXW].
Altrettanto in questo modo la frequenza RX varierà girando però la manopola [CLAR/VFO-B] !! Setting of the TX/RX for SPLIT operation: accendere ON  [POWER] mentre si tiene pressato il tasto [SPLIT] per attivare questo modo di settaggio  con la variazione temporanea in Operazioni Split ….!! e… viceversa!

!! Si sta procedendo ad aggiornare solo 2 dei 4 firmware incorporati, con differenti software utility (Trasfer..) e 4 files a differenti  estensioni (SLF – dat – bin etc), nel Transceiver (Yaesu utilizza ancora qui il sistema  “multiple software systems installations”! rispetto alla Icom e Kenwood che usano, invece, un software a sistema unico di sviluppo). Quindi ignorare i passaggi ripetitivi (spegni, collega cavi, accendi, carica 1, ripristina e poi ancora, etc. etc.) previsti per il DSP e per la FFT (att. diverso da TFT!!) [..alla fine si rimane senza dita da pigiare contemporaneamente hi!!]

[Note] La funzione schermo intero richiede l’installazione delle Ver. xxxx_V0114.SFL ( MAIN CPU) e Ver. xxxxx_V01-07_xxxxx.bin (software x TFT). Per il funzionamento e le caratteristiche di cui sopra, si prega di fare riferimento ai fogli aggiuntivi per le nuove funzioni Spectrum & per VFO SPLIT a cura di YAESU MUSEN CO.,LTD & Yaesu-USA #EH046H500 (!! n. 2 pagine .pdf incluse nella stessa cartella (.zip) FTDX3000_Update_July1)

!! You are only doing the Main-CPU and TFT updates. You are NOT doing the DSP or FFT updates, just ignore those instructions at this time on the Upgrade Manual & FTdx3000 Additional useful functions sheet (n. 2 pages pdf  included in the same zip folder … FTDX3000_Update_July1 (.zip))

[Note] The rig has to be started in different ways for each of these two updates to work!  The Yaesu “Firmware Upgrade Manual” has the update procedure for all of the Firmware-Modules & extention type (MAIN .SFL – DSP .dat – TFT .bin – FFT .dat), and for all Trasfer-Softwares (!! QST reviews the  FTDX-3000 on April, 2013 – An favorable overview of the YAESU FTdx3000 100W HF/50MHz Transceiver on the QST magazine. ARRL labs including high close-in IMD3 data, but only -82 dBc at 2 kHz RMDR figure.

Reciprocal Mixing Dynamic Range (RMDR) is noise generated in a superheterodyne receiver when noise from the local oscillator (LO) mixes with strong, adjacent signals. – (See the QST April 2012,  pag. 55 [Large Box] Reciprocal Mixing Testing: What Is It?, written by Bob Allison, WB1GCM)

NPR_va7oj-labsCon il Test NPR Adam, spiega che il Generatore di Rumore Bianco (W&G RS-50 il suo) immette un segnale a banda larga al connettore d’antenna e quindi carica tutti gli stati del ricevitore, il Front-end, i Filtri e l’eventuale Preselettore, simulando la risposta alla ricezione di multi-segnali del DUT in prova (come in realtà succede collegandovi un’antenna). Dice poi Adam che questo Test equivale a 1200 segnali in SSB simultanei! a -43 dBm ciascuno i.e. a S9+30 dB! – Il rumore bianco viene rimosso con una tacca alla frequenza sintonizzata del ricevitore da un adatto filtro notch, inserito in serie tra generatore e antenna imput – A causa della distorsione dei circuiti del ricevitore (DUT imput), questa tacca (notch) tende a riempirsi con prodotti di intermodulazione, i cui effetti verranno oppurtunamente misurati in uscita (DUT output). – Here is the link to VA7OJ’s FTdx-3000 FT-950 TS-590S IC-7700 and IC-7410 K3 etc. NPR testing report in PDF of March 2013.

New IC-7700 MOSFET PA Unit – The IC-7700’s (S/N #12 USA/Canada, S/N #13 EUR etc.*) now have just one Mosfet (STAC2942) on the PA board, instead of the two MRF-150 of previous PA Unit (ex S/N #02 USA/Canada, ex S/N #03 EUR etc.*)

italianoNuovo PA Unit sull’IC-7700 – La nuova serie di IC-7700 (S/N #12 USA/Canda, S/N #13 EUR ecc.*) montano un solo dispositivo MOSFET (STAC2942) sulla scheda PA-UNIT, invece dei due transistor MRF-150 della precedente versione del PA-Unit (ex S/N #02 USA/Canada, ex S/N #03 EUR etc.*)

IC-7700_external-monitorL’attuale Rev. #12/#13 incorpora la nuova versione del PA-UNIT e moduli LPF, inoltre diversi altri moduli del transceiver sono “up-rev.” rispetto alle versioni precedenti. – Ora tutti gli IC-7700’s con un “1” nella prima cifra del S/N (numero di serie) hanno il nuovo PA-UNIT e i moduli LPF.
Esempio*: Giappone: #11XXXXX – USA / Canada: #12XXXXX – UE: #13XXXXX etc.

The current Rev. #12/#13 version incorporates the new PA-UNIT and LPF modules, and in addition several other modules are also “up-rev.” from the earlier version.

The IC-7700 uses a STAC2942 power amplifier in common source push-pull configuration (common source). The power amplifier provides a eliable 200W of output power up to 54MHz. – The STAC2942B is a gold metallized N-channel MOS field-effect RF power transistor. It is intended for use in 50 V DC large signal applications up to 250 MHz (ST datasheet)
The effective quad cooling fan system makes it possible to generate 200W full power output even during full duty cycle operation.

[Rumors] It is said that the manufacturer of the MRF-150 used in the 7700’s series PA Unit, has recently discontinued this supply. This event has probably brought Icom to design a new PA Unit based on  the new DMOS STAC2942 ©STMicroelectronics parts.
 * Other regional variants will have different serial number for the change-over to a MOSFET PA – (!! Official info: ask retailers or Icom Inc., please)
